The Riverside/Brookfield Landmark came out against the proposed property tax increase in an editorial in the October 21, 2008 edition. From the editorial:
"But this isn't the tax increase we can support. Not at this time; not under these circumstances."
"But none of these cuts would have to be made if the village had decided that now was time to hold the line, not expand services."
"...the village does, in fact, have enough money to fund services at current levels..."
"While trustees bristle at the mention, it was a deliberate decision a year ago to move $1 million in undesignated fund reserves to the capital improvement fund. That act accelerated the referendum debate. But those funds still exist and are available to get the village through a rocky time. Like now."
"...what it [the Village Board] is asking of taxpayers - who have seen school-related increases skyrocket in recent years and who may see another high school referendum by 2010 - is too much."
"The village needs to stabilize services; it does not need to pose rule-or-ruin referendum questions to voters."
